Carlbrook School is a private, coeducational, college preparatory boarding school located on 200 acres (0.81 km2) in Halifax, Virginia. The school serves approximately 130 students in grades 9-12 and is nonsectarian in orientation.[1] Admission to Carlbrook is selective, focusing primarily on students of high aptitude and potential who have struggled academically or socially in previous educational environments.[2] Carlbrook School is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools[3] and the Virginia Council for Private Education,[4] and is a member of the Secondary School Admission Test Board,[5] the Small Boarding Schools Association,[6] and the Educational Records Bureau.[7]

According to its website, the mission of Carlbrook School is to help students “discover, internalize, and effectively utilize the intellectual and personal resources necessary to succeed in life.”[8] The school follows a quarter-based academic calendar and awards the high school Diploma in accordance with Virginia Department of Education guidelines.[9] Coursework is demanding, with multiple Advanced Placement courses and several advanced and dual-enrollment offerings;[10] in addition to the school’s academic requirements, graduating students must also demonstrate leadership and character through extracurricular involvement and/or community service. Over the past decade, Carlbrook students have been accepted at over 500 colleges and universities nationwide.[11]
